Wake up in Metairie, a quarter of New Orleans. We slept in a Ramada's parking. We took the time to go in a mall, but everything was closed (Today its Friday so everything was closed until 12h00).
We must precise that the temperature today is bad, sometimes it rain and the sky is full of clouds.
So after the Mall, we head up to the Guitar Center, to play some guitar and to see some musical gear. Around 12h30, we leave that place heading up to the East New Orleans, where the city is the most destroyed. Taking back the road 10 that pass just on the limit of the Downtown, it took less than 1 minute to see more and more destroyed and ghost houses and streets.
The east of the city is incredibly destroyed, we can see that this part of the city is situated under the other quarters, lower than the other quarters. The most part of the houses there are still ghost and empty, in a very bad condition, some owners with money have a RV parked on their lot, near their house, but lot of houses are simply empty and ghost and its easy to see that the water was flooding until the roof, so those houses need to be destroyed.
What sad it is, when we think about the quarter where everything was apparently not perfect but not so far, and just a couple of streets further, we return in the saddest reality of New Orleans. We didn't go to visit the worst quarters, just to see the people trying to continue their life in those houses which were all flooded in the water make us understand they don't need some tourists to add at their problems.
So we continue our road through Biloxi, another city where Katrina happened in the Mississippi, that we visit last year. Lot of houses are been just destroyed and the lots are now empty, with the ancient houses's floors still there. One or two hotels have been constructed in Biloxi and the most part of the ancient hotels still there was renovated except some hotels (Casino Magic for example).
For the residents, some houses are still in good condition. The houses near the water were severally injured so the most part are gone now. Some residents put a RV on their lot, near their house, some others are living in their RV also but in some specific quarter for this, like old parking that are now quarter for RV's.
So, on Ocean Springs's side (On the other side of the Bay Bridge that bring you in Biloxi, a bridge in reconstruction), less damages apparently, the bridge is totally in reconstruction and the most part of the houses are in good condition.
We continue our road through Mobile in Alabama, where we took the highway 65 heading up to Montgomery and Atlanta, Georgia. The rain and the grey clouds stayed over our head, a big thunderstorm of about 40 minutes felt on the Van during we were taking the supper. We'll sleep in a Truck Stop about 100 miles of Montgomery.
